What Is a Bulgarian Kitenik?
The traditional Bulgarian term kitenik is used for a wool textile distinguished by its dense pile and soft, highly textured surface.
For international buyers, this piece can also be described as a Bulgarian high-pile wool rug, Balkan folk rug or handwoven wool textile.
Using the original word kitenik preserves the cultural identity of the object, while “rug” makes its function immediately understandable to a wider audience.
Preserved Provenance from Byala, Bulgaria
One of the most interesting aspects of this kitenik is its documented family history.
According to the information preserved with the textile, it was made in Byala, Bulgaria, in the early 1970s by a woman weaver who created it for the interior of her new home.
Rather than being a factory-produced household textile, it was made in a domestic setting using a traditional hand loom.
The wool was also reportedly dyed at home, adding another layer of individual craftsmanship to the piece.
Rich Floral Balkan Design
The design is dominated by a strong floral and botanical vocabulary rather than strict geometric ornament.
A richly coloured central floral medallion forms the visual focus of the composition, surrounded by flowers, leaves and scrolling botanical elements.
The wide border repeats floral motifs in green, cream, white, yellow, pink, purple, brown and burgundy against the intense red ground.
The decorative character is reminiscent of broader Bulgarian and Balkan folk textile traditions, with stylistic echoes of floral ornament associated with regions such as Kotel and Koprivshtitsa.
These comparisons describe the visual character only. The known provenance of this particular kitenik is Byala, Bulgaria.
Natural Wool & Handwoven Construction
The front surface has a dense, high wool pile that creates a soft sculptural texture and gives the colours considerable depth.
Close-up photographs reveal individual yarn variation, raised floral forms and the irregularities expected from genuine hand craftsmanship.
The reverse side shows the woven foundation and coloured yarn structure, providing useful visual evidence of the textile’s construction.
Natural Home-Dyed Wool
According to its preserved history, the kitenik was woven from natural wool dyed in a domestic setting.
The palette includes vivid red, burgundy, green, cream, white, yellow, pink, purple and dark brown or black accents.
The subtle variations within the colours contribute to the individual character of the textile and distinguish it from uniform industrial production.

The wool pile remains dense, the floral motifs are clearly defined and the colours retain strong visual intensity.
No major tears, extensive pile loss or significant structural damage are visible in the photographs provided.
As with any handmade textile more than five decades old, minor variations from weaving, dyeing and long-term storage may be present and form part of its authentic vintage character.
Please examine all photographs carefully, including the front, reverse, pile, borders and edge details, as they form an important part of the description.
A Bulgarian Textile from the Communist Era
The kitenik dates to the early 1970s, placing it within the period of Communist-era Bulgaria.
Its historical context is important, but this is not an example of anonymous industrial production. According to the preserved history, it was individually handwoven by a woman for her own home.
It therefore represents a particularly interesting survival of traditional Bulgarian domestic textile craftsmanship during the socialist period.
For Traditional, Boho & Contemporary Interiors
Its vivid colour and strong floral composition allow this Bulgarian kitenik to work in both traditional and contemporary settings.
Placed on the floor, it creates a dramatic focal point when paired with natural timber, dark brown furniture, neutral upholstery and green decorative accents.
It can also be displayed as a large textile wall hanging, where the floral composition can function almost like a piece of folk art.
The piece works particularly well in boho, eclectic, maximalist, rustic, folk-inspired and contemporary interiors.
A distinctive collector’s textile for admirers of Bulgarian folk art, Balkan rugs, handwoven wool textiles, vintage Eastern European interiors and traditional craftsmanship.
