Traditional Bulgarian Water-Carrying Yoke
The wooden shoulder yoke was once an important everyday tool in rural households.
Its long curved form allowed the weight of two suspended vessels to be distributed across the shoulders, making it easier to transport water from wells, fountains or springs back to the home.
In Bulgaria, such yokes were traditionally used with metal, wooden or copper water vessels, including the traditional vessels known locally as mentsi.
Functional Curved Shape
The shape of this antique yoke is entirely practical.
The central section follows the natural line of the shoulders, while the long arms extend outward to keep the suspended vessels away from the body during walking.
The pronounced curved silhouette also gives the object a strong sculptural presence when displayed today as an antique decorative piece.
Carved End Slots for Suspended Vessels
Both ends of the yoke incorporate characteristic carved slots and raised retaining sections.
These functional details were designed to hold ropes, chains or hooks securely in place while water pots, buckets or other containers were suspended beneath the yoke.
Close-up photographs clearly document these original structural details.
Hand-Worked Solid Wood
The yoke has been shaped from a substantial piece of solid timber using traditional woodworking methods.
The surface retains visible grain, irregularities and tool-related characteristics consistent with an old utilitarian object rather than a modern decorative reproduction.
The exact species of wood has not been scientifically identified and is therefore not stated as a specific timber.
Original Patina & Long-Term Wear
One of the strongest features of this object is its authentic aged surface.
The wood shows darkening, smoothing, scratches, rubbing, colour variation, small splits and other signs accumulated through age and prolonged practical use.
These marks have not been artificially created and form an important part of the historical character of the piece.
Provenance – Pavlikeni Region, Bulgaria
According to the preserved provenance, the yoke comes from the rural area around Pavlikeni in northern Bulgaria.
Dating to approximately around 1900, it belongs to a period when carrying water manually was still part of everyday domestic life in many Bulgarian villages.
The object therefore has interest not only as a functional antique tool but also as an example of Bulgarian rural material culture and ethnographic heritage.
Dimensions
- Overall length: Approx. 153 cm / 60.2 in
Condition
The yoke is preserved in authentic antique used condition.
It shows substantial age-related wear including surface abrasion, darkened areas, scratches, weathering, grain movement and local splits consistent with its age and original practical function.
The carved ends, slots, curved body and wooden surface have been photographed in detail so that the condition can be evaluated before purchase.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Primitive Farmhouse & Rustic Wall Decor
Today this antique shoulder yoke can be displayed as a striking decorative object in a rustic, farmhouse, country, Provence, primitive, ethnographic or wabi-sabi interior.
Its length of 153 cm gives it enough visual presence to work as a large horizontal wall accent above a sideboard, fireplace, dining table or kitchen worktop.
The aged wood combines particularly well with natural stone, limewashed walls, terracotta, linen, pottery, aged metal and antique furniture.
Display Idea – Copper Water Pots & Flowers
One of the most historically evocative ways to display the yoke is with two old copper water vessels suspended from its ends using chains or strong ropes.
For decorative garden or veranda use, the vessels may also be repurposed as planters for geraniums, petunias or other seasonal flowers.
Display Idea – Rustic Pendant Light
The yoke can also inspire a dramatic suspended lighting installation in a farmhouse or Provence-style interior.
When adapted for lighting, all electrical work and load-bearing installation should be carried out by a qualified professional, taking into account the age and condition of the original wood.
Collector’s Note
This is not a modern reproduction but an authentic old working object with visible evidence of practical use.
Its documented regional provenance, c. 1900 date, large 153 cm size, curved form, carved suspension slots and original patina make it an appealing piece for collectors of Bulgarian folk art, Balkan ethnographic objects, primitive tools and traditional rural antiques.
Please note: Copper pots, chains, plants, lighting components and other decorative accessories shown in lifestyle or infographic images are not included. The sale is for the original wooden shoulder yoke only.
