Traditional Two-Panel Construction
One of the most interesting features of the blanket is its central joining seam. The textile was woven as two separate wool panels and then joined lengthwise to create the full finished width.
This is not a later repair, but part of the original construction. Traditional domestic looms were narrower than the finished width required for a large blanket, so wider household textiles were commonly produced as separate loom-width sections and subsequently joined together.
The visible centre join is therefore an important part of the blanket’s history and helps illustrate the practical methods used in traditional Bulgarian domestic weaving.
Wool, Weave and Texture
The blanket has a dense wool construction with a fine diagonal woven texture. Close-up views reveal the rhythm of the handwoven fibres and the irregularities that give handmade textiles their individual character.
The natural cream colour allows the woven structure to remain the principal decorative element, while the original fringed edges complete the traditional appearance.
How It Can Be Used Today
Although originally made as a practical household blanket, this nearly century-old Bulgarian textile can also be displayed and used today as a distinctive antique interior accent.
- As a bed blanket or bed cover – its original and most natural use.
- As a sofa throw – the natural wool and neutral cream colour work particularly well in rustic, farmhouse, country, bohemian and natural interiors.
- As a veranda or wooden-bench cover – ideal for creating warmth, texture and an authentic traditional atmosphere.
- As a cover for a wooden chest or traditional bench – especially effective when paired with aged timber and other natural materials.
- As a wall textile – the woven texture, fringes and visible centre join can be displayed as part of the history of traditional Bulgarian handweaving.
- For guest houses, taverns and ethnographic interiors – an original period textile rather than a modern folk-style reproduction.
- For photography, film and stage design – suitable as an authentic prop for rural, traditional or interwar-period interiors.
- As a collectible ethnographic textile – of interest to collectors of Bulgarian folk culture, domestic weaving and traditional European textiles.
