Traditional Water-Carrying Tool
The wooden shoulder yoke was an important practical object in traditional rural life.
Its purpose was to distribute the weight of two suspended vessels across the shoulders, making it easier to transport water from a well, village fountain or spring to the household.
In Bulgaria, such yokes could be used with metal, wooden or copper vessels, including traditional water containers known locally as mentsi.
Pronounced Curved Form
One of the most distinctive characteristics of this example is its deeply curved silhouette.
The central section follows the line of the shoulders, while the long projecting arms keep suspended vessels away from the body while walking.
The pronounced curve was originally functional, but today gives the object a particularly strong sculptural presence when displayed on a wall.
Carved End Notches
The ends retain deep functional carved notches designed to secure ropes, straps, chains or hooks.
The rounded sections beyond the notches act as retaining ends, helping prevent the suspension system from sliding off while the carrier was moving.
These original structural features are clearly visible in the detailed photographs.
Hand-Worked Solid Wood
The yoke is formed from substantial solid timber using traditional manual woodworking techniques.
Its surface retains irregularities, visible grain, tool-related marks and wear associated with an old utilitarian object rather than a modern decorative reproduction.
The exact species of wood has not been scientifically identified and is therefore not stated as a specific timber.
Original Patina & Evidence of Long Use
The wooden surface retains a highly expressive natural antique patina.
Visible features include darkening, smoothing, scratches, rubbing, colour variation, local splits, small old holes and other changes accumulated through age and prolonged practical use.
These marks are part of the object’s history and have not been artificially created for decorative effect.
Old Crack at One End
One end shows a clearly visible old longitudinal crack, documented in the close-up photographs.
This forms part of the present antique condition and should be taken into account if the object is mounted or adapted for decorative use.
Provenance – Central Bulgaria
According to the preserved provenance, the yoke comes from Central Bulgaria.
Its pre-1900 date places it within the period when carrying water manually remained part of daily life in many Bulgarian rural communities.
The object therefore has value not only as an old functional tool, but also as a tangible example of Bulgarian rural material culture and ethnographic heritage.

Primitive Farmhouse & Rustic Wall Decor
Today this antique Bulgarian shoulder yoke can also be displayed as a dramatic decorative object in a primitive, farmhouse, rustic, country, Provence, ethnographic or wabi-sabi interior.
Its pronounced curve and naturally aged surface work especially well with stone walls, reclaimed wood, ceramics, copper, linen and traditional textiles.
Display Idea – Photo & Memory Wall
Mounted horizontally above a sofa, fireplace or in a hallway, the yoke can be used as a distinctive wall display.
Hemp cords may be suspended along its length and used with small wooden clothespins to display black-and-white photographs, dried herbs, chili peppers or lightweight decorative keepsakes.
Display Idea – Kitchen or Tavern Rack
In a farmhouse kitchen, tavern or guest house, the yoke can be suspended or securely wall-mounted and fitted with hooks for lightweight decorative vessels.
Copper cups, traditional coffee pots, ceramic mugs and small jugs complement the original rural character of the piece particularly well.
Condition
The yoke is preserved in authentic antique used condition.
It shows natural wear, scratches, darkened areas, local splitting, small old holes and other age-related surface changes consistent with its long practical history.
An old longitudinal crack is visible at one end and is shown clearly in the detailed photographs.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
Please note: Cups, coffee pots, photographs, herbs, cords, hooks and other accessories shown in lifestyle or infographic images are not included. The sale is for the original wooden shoulder yoke only.
