Description
Vintage Balkan Horse Collar Wall Mirror
A striking decorative wall mirror created from an authentic old working horse collar, retaining the original leather, iron fittings, rings, chain and naturally aged surface.
The horse collar itself is an older Balkan agricultural harness component originally made for a working or draft horse. It has since been carefully repurposed into a decorative mirror, with a newly fitted mirror panel shaped to follow the distinctive teardrop-shaped opening of the original collar.
This combination of genuine historic equestrian equipment and modern reuse makes the piece an excellent example of upcycled vintage décor: the original object and its signs of working life have been preserved while being given a new decorative function.
Overall dimensions are approximately 82 cm high × 46 cm wide × 16 cm deep (32.3 × 18.1 × 6.3 in).

Original Working Horse Collar
The frame is formed from a genuine horse collar formerly used as part of a working harness. This type of collar was designed to distribute the pulling force of a horse when attached to agricultural equipment, a cart or other load.
The substantial padded form protected the horse while working, while the iron rings, chain and attachment points connected the collar to the wider harness system.
The preserved leather surface, stitching, fastening straps and metal hardware retain the strong utilitarian character of the original piece.
Original Leather & Iron Hardware
The collar retains numerous original details, including natural leather padding, stitched leather sections, iron rings, chain, studs and harness fittings.
The iron elements show oxidation, wear and surface variation acquired through age and use. The leather also displays creasing, rubbing, colour variation and areas of dryness consistent with an old working object.
These features have intentionally been preserved rather than concealed, as they form an essential part of the mirror’s character and history.
New Mirror Glass
The mirror itself is a later addition and is not original to the horse collar.
A new mirror panel has been fitted into the central opening, following the natural shape of the collar and transforming the original agricultural object into a functional wall mirror.
This distinction is important: the historic element is the horse collar and its harness fittings, while the reflective mirror glass is modern.
Upcycling and a New Life for an Old Object
This mirror is an excellent example of upcycling – giving an authentic old object a new purpose while preserving its history, original materials and visible traces of use.
Rather than dismantling or discarding the old horse collar, its original construction has been preserved and adapted for a new life in a contemporary interior. This reflects the philosophy behind Why We Exist – preserving meaningful objects and allowing their stories to continue.
The piece also reflects Our Promise to treat historic objects with respect, preserve their character and help them continue their journey with a new owner.
The result combines equestrian history, rustic craftsmanship and sustainable upcycling in a single decorative object.
The distinctive teardrop form makes the mirror particularly suitable as a statement piece in an entrance hall, living room, country house, farmhouse interior, lodge, restaurant, guest house or equestrian-themed space.
Condition
The vintage horse collar is in authentic aged condition and shows substantial signs of its former working life.
The leather displays surface wear, dryness, scratches, colour variation and natural patina. The iron rings, chain and fittings show oxidation and age-related wear.
These characteristics are visible in the photographs and are considered part of the object’s historic and decorative character.
The mirror glass is a newer addition.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and clearly show the actual condition of the leather, metal components, chain, fittings and mirror conversion.
Dating
The horse collar is an older traditional working harness piece. No maker’s mark, dated stamp or documentary record has been identified, so an exact production date is not stated.
Its construction and materials are consistent with traditional Balkan and Eastern European working horse equipment used during the 20th century.
For Rustic & Modern Interiors
Although rooted in traditional agricultural life, the mirror also works surprisingly well in contemporary interiors.
Against a clean modern wall, the aged leather, iron fittings and irregular handmade surfaces create a strong contrast and give the room warmth and individuality.
It is particularly suitable for rustic farmhouse décor, country interiors, equestrian décor, Western-inspired spaces, vintage interiors and eclectic modern homes.
Its distinctive shape and aged materials also make it a natural fit within our Antique & Vintage Interior Items collection.
A distinctive decorative object combining an authentic old horse collar with a newly fitted mirror — ideal for collectors of vintage equestrian equipment, agricultural heritage, rustic interiors and unusual upcycled décor.
