Description

Rare Bulgarian EAB Bone China Espresso Set

Rare vintage Bulgarian bone china espresso set associated with the Experimental Assortment Base (EAB), comprising three espresso cups and three matching saucers – six pieces in total.

The set is made from exceptionally fine, lightweight and translucent bone china and is decorated with extensive gold ornament together with elegant black scrolling motifs.

The combination of delicate porcelain, rich gilding and unusual decorative design gives the set a distinctly luxurious and representative character.

Experimental Assortment Base – EAB

The original circular factory backstamps identify the pieces with the Bulgarian Experimental Assortment Base – “Експериментална асортиментна база”.

EAB was associated with the development of distinctive decorative forms, patterns and higher-quality tableware during the socialist period in Bulgaria.

Unlike ordinary mass-market household porcelain, surviving EAB pieces are of particular interest to collectors because of their unusual designs, production context and comparatively limited appearance on today’s market.

The exact production quantity of this particular pattern is not documented.

Fine Bulgarian Bone China

The cups are notably light and the porcelain body is finely made and translucent when held against strong light, characteristics consistent with bone china.

The refined body distinguishes the set from heavier everyday ceramic and porcelain tableware.

The combination of fine translucent bone china, rich gilding and an unusual decorative language makes this set an especially interesting example within the wider history of
Bulgarian porcelain.

24K Gold Decoration

According to the information accompanying the set, the extensive gilded decoration was executed with 24-karat gold.

Wide gold bands decorate the rims of the saucers and the upper and lower sections of the cups, while the handles are also richly gilded.

The gold areas contain delicate scrolling and floral ornament visible within the metallic surface, giving the decoration considerably more depth than a simple plain gold band.

The 24K specification has not been independently laboratory tested and is stated according to the provenance information supplied with the set.

Arabesque-Style Decorative Motif

The central decoration is formed from flowing black scrolls, floral elements and repeating curved lines.

Its visual language has a subtle arabesque or Oriental-inspired character, contrasting strongly with the warm gold decoration and white porcelain body.

This decorative vocabulary is particularly interesting in the context of Bulgaria’s extensive diplomatic, commercial and cultural relationships with countries in the Middle East and other developing regions during the second half of the 20th century.

There is currently no documentary evidence proving that this specific pattern was designed exclusively for an Arab delegation or particular international event, so the decorative influence is presented as a stylistic interpretation rather than documented provenance.

Representative and Hospitality Context

According to the provenance information associated with the set, high-quality EAB tableware of this type was intended for representative environments rather than ordinary everyday household use.

Such porcelain was reportedly encountered in higher-category hotels, official receptions, conferences, business meetings and events involving foreign delegations and senior representatives of the Bulgarian state and institutional establishment.

This historical context helps explain the unusually rich decoration, fine porcelain body and formal character of the set.

The precise institution, hotel, conference or delegation connected with this particular six-piece set is not documented.

Bulgarian Porcelain History

The Experimental Assortment Base forms part of a wider and still relatively little-known history of Bulgarian decorative porcelain.

Original EAB Backstamps

The bases carry the distinctive circular Cyrillic backstamp reading “Експериментална асортиментна база”.

The surviving marks are particularly important for identification because they connect the pieces directly with EAB rather than leaving the manufacturer dependent solely on stylistic attribution.

Photographs of the backstamps are included in the gallery and form an important part of the documentation of the set.
